Meet Eva!
We are fostering-to-adopt her from a local working breed rescue.
She loves to play and wants to please. She doesn't quite know what to make of the cats yet, so while we work on teaching her "leave it," "drop it," and "down," each species gets half the house.
Originally, we were told she was a Belgian Malinois / German Shepherd mix, but as she slowly gains weight she looks like pure shepherd.
I've had a rescue dog in the past; Max hasn't, but he has had a German Shepherd and I have not. This should be a fantastic learning, sharing, and growing experience for both of us!

ReplyDeleteI rescued my dog in July 2009. (an Australian Cattle Dog/Belgian Tervuren mix) He was an absolute angel for the first few weeks and then he morphed into Satan... I literally used to hide in the closet and cry to get away from him. Doggie teenage years + not nearly enough exercise for a working breed was awful but I can definitely say that I came out of it a better person and I wouldn't give him up for anything. Having a working breed means a lot more work than I think some people are prepared for (yesterday we walked 6+ miles and he was still rarin' to go and play with my mom's dog in the evening) but I can't imagine having it any other way at this point. It can be a rough adjustment at first but just be patient and I'm sure she will be a wonderful dog! Good luck!

DeleteWe are slowly adjusting! My last dog was a beagle / lab mix so I was definitely surprised by Eva's exercise needs - even more so since she has not really ever exercised in her adult life. She can't get enough! I'll have to put on my pedometer and actually measure the distance but I know for a fact we walked for at least 2.5 hours yesterday, played ball for 30 minutes, and then went for a ~20 minute run... and then she was finally tired. LOL! We don't want to start working on commands with her just yet (other than "drop it" and "leave it" and then very limitedly - we don't want to overwhelm her!!) but I'm sure when we start doing that, that'll use a decent amount of energy - brainpower! haha.
They certainly do have personality! Sometimes I feel like I have a toddler at home...I actually have a video of my dog vs. my best friends 2 year old as to who can do tricks better. Indy won... I started taking him herding this past fall and it exhausts him in only like 20 minutes! (this is him - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAZgHdxofQc)
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of exercise! Training does make a big difference in the tiredness - I've found just putting some food around him and telling him to leave it and making him sit there and wait to get it can wear him out. Also playing tug while we work on "drop it" so he gets some energy out during the process. And, of course, getting out and about regularly will start to wear down her energy level, too. I'm sure you'll be able to pick things up with her training soon, they're SO smart, I bet she'll love it!
She is definitely bright!!! We started teaching her "sit" in German yesterday (we want a bilingual dog ;-)) and it only took her three or four repeats to get it. Of course now she just randomly sits anytime she wants a treat but hey - she totally knows what we're saying when we say it.
Delete"Drop it" is next!!! she will respond to that command when we play fetch but we haven't tried to actually teach her what it means yet. We really want the cats and dog to get to hang out ;-) so I can't wait to get started!!!
Beautiful dog. I had a German Shepherd growing up. I loved that dog. Now we have a puggle. She is a great dog for a quiet family.

DeleteI have 2 rescue dogs. A 72 lb. Coon hound/Rhodesian mix and a 7 lb. long hair Chihuahua/Yorkie mix. Totally different personalities. Small one is definitely Alpha. Went through the crazy dog syndrome, as well - sometimes still get a dose of "Franken-Dog" with the big one when we see other dogs on walks. He goes from happy to psycho in an instant. They are great with my 2 cats, though.
ReplyDeleteOh wow!!!! So funny that the littler one is the alpha. Eva goes a little nutso when she sees another dog... we can't figure out if it's because she wants to play or if she'd be aggressive! We're going to have to socialize her slowly - she's stronger than I am so I don't want to take the risk with a random neighbor's dog!

Awwww thank you!! =) I have always been a rescuer - I've never 'bought' a dog or cat from anywhere! Rescue animals are absolutely the best, I definitely believe they bond with you much better than a puppy AND I mean - you're saving a life, saving a soul's sanity, and helping to right a wrong in the world!
