I promised I'd be back to re-cap finals today, and that's exactly what I'm going to do! =)
When we left off yesterday, I was thirsty and waiting for the night show. And that makes up most of the rest of the story. haha!
I left the hotel at 3:45 to get to the hotel for the 4pm athletes' meeting. This time, I did my hair and makeup in the hotel before I even left, which was a mistake. Since finals started at 5pm and bikini was after Men's Physique, Women's Physique, and Figure, I thought we'd be on stage at around 6:15.
That didn't happen.
We started late, there was an intermission with a performance, and a guest poser. I snuck into the audience and watched with Max & Grampa since a couple of people I knew were competing in Men's Physique. Plus, it was easier to stop thinking about how much I wanted to guzzle a gallon of water when I was distracted. ;-)
Bikini finally got on stage at almost 7pm. I think I did better with my posing during the night show...
...although I was flatter.
My hair and makeup were poorly done for both pre-judging and finals.
I could not believe it when I saw this pic on the photographer's website:
YIKES! (All my hair was brushed forward to show off my back, but uh, yeah, I missed a couple pieces with the flat-iron....)
One of my friends was supposed to come to the show to help with hair and makeup since I am woefully bad at both, but she ran into transportation trouble. I should have done a few practice rounds on my own, though.
Anyway, the head judge lined us up and the trophy girls came out. The announcer said "fourth place goes to..." and I immediately finished with "29" (my number) in my head, before he had a chance to finish - I knew.
I won't lie - I was a little disappointed. But I know why I got fourth place: my rigid posing (ya gotta be flirty, confident and sassy in bikini!), my hair (I'm still cringing) and the fact that my suit didn't fit (it was used and I lost more from the hips than I anticipated). I also wasn't able to pump up very effectively: I totally forgot to bring a resistance band so in a pinch I was using a 3/4ths-full gallon of water.
All in all, though, it was a really great experience. I learned a lot about the sport - things you don't even think of until you experience them, like the dehydration, the peeing in a cup so you don't splash water onto your tan, the complete and unique chaos that is show day - and, more importantly, I grew a LOT as a person throughout this entire process.
A little over a year ago I decided I would never be able to compete. I was sure of it. And last weekend, I proved myself wrong. I looked like I belonged on stage. My conditioning was on point. I was certainly lean enough. I even committed to manipulating my water intake for a week.
I'll talk about my plans for the future in another post, probably Thursday. I will say right now, though, that this will be my only show this year.
I also just want to take a moment to give a special thank you to Max. He was incredibly supportive, helpful, and (he's gonna kill me for saying this) sensitive all weekend, whether I was asking him to run and get me a gallon of water to pump up with (yep, I forgot resistance bands), forcing him to sleep in a 65-degree hotel room so that I wouldn't sweat and ruin my tan, or asking him to give me detailed and brutally honest feedback about how I did. I wouldn't have been able to diet for the past 16 weeks without his support & encouragement, and I am truly blessed to have him in my life.
I'll see you guys tomorrow for a food-porn-filled WIAW! <3

Awesome!!! You inspire me more than you know Sable, I admire your dedication so much :)
ReplyDeleteDon't beat yourself up too much about the hair and posing-- it was your first show EVER and you looked FABULOUS!!!! (better than the others if you ask me) and you learned some great stuff for the future :) Can't wait to hear your plans for what's ahead!
AND I'm stoked for your foodporn-riffic WIAW haha
Aw - thank you so much Alexandra! =) I definitely learned a lot!!!!
DeleteI agree with Alexandra -- don't beat yourself up over the hair and posing! I'm sure that everyone's first show comes with a few surprises, and that's the only way you learn, right? I think you looked amazing, and as I said yesterday, I'm so proud of you for just getting up there in the first place. And great job to Max for being such an awesome, supportive husband!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely!! Now I know! =) And those are a couple of mistakes I've gotten out of the way for next time, ya know?
DeleteAmazing work! You looked awesome and should be so proud. I'm most excited about what you're going to EAT though. LOL!
ReplyDeletehaha! Just wait! ;-) it was an epic day.
DeleteCongrats Sable!!!!!!!! You did amazing regardless of the results, it is incredible what you went through, and I really admire you!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Cheryl!!! =)
DeleteI agree with the others- don't be hard on yourself you looked amazing!!! Max sounds like an awesome partner! Support is so important!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! =) I am really lucky to have Max =) =)
DeleteCongrats on competing! It's really not about winning these things. It's about the process :)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! =)
DeleteDear Sable, you are unique! Especially knowing you from a year ago – when you were all about strength – and now - Voila! You are one of the most beautiful fitness competitors ever. Thank you for inspiring me to dream and kick ass for those dreams. You rock!
ReplyDeleteAww Greta - your comments always make me smile =) =) I'm so lucky to have met someone like you in the blog world! =)
DeleteCongrats, Sable! Do you think you'll do it again?
ReplyDeleteI'm really surprised that the girl on the right placed better than you. She doesn't look all that lean. That's about what I look like right now and I wouldn't dream of competing. (note - I actually prefer this sort of look so I'm not trying to put the girl down! I'm just surprised at how she placed)
I will definitely be competing again, but not in bikini, for the reason you mention...that girl on the far right was less conditioned and lean than I was and she placed better than me for one simple reason: sex appeal. I don't have much of it and she had a lot of it, and in my district, bikini is all about sex appeal. So I'm waiting until I have enough muscle to compete in figure =)
DeleteI think that's why I'm a little uncomfortable with bikini as well. I'm still really surprised that you don't have enough muscle for figure. It kind of makes me wonder how much muscle (or lack thereof) I actually have under my fluff!
DeleteI also meant to say that girl on the right looks great - that's how I want to look in the off-season for sure. She was also GORGEOUS, like supermodel pretty.
DeleteI lost a good amount of muscle dieting :/ Part of that was being put on Cytomel - the dose was way too high at first and I just burned muscle. =(
You look so awesome! To me, you're oozing sex appeal in those photos so I can't imagine you not having sass up there! It was probably just first time jitters.
ReplyDeleteI just read the comment above about you wanting to do figure and I agreeeee! When I went to my first show, I was so surprised at some of the girls in bikini. Without wanting to sound too mean, most of them just looked like they rolled out of bed that morning and decided to give it a shot. The girls who were in the best shape didn't win. On one hand, it inspired me to get on stage but on the other, I told myself right then that I would rather not compete at all then compete in bikini. All competitions are subjective, but at least figure is a little stricter, in my opinion. I know not all comps are like this, but it would be just a massive let down to work my ass off (literally) and then lose to someone far more deconditioned than me.
I'm not just saying this because I'm your friend, but I seriously think you look the best by far. I have to be honest, when I saw the photos of you in the last couple of weeks I thought you were coming in too lean to place well, but when I saw those stage photos I was flabbergasted. You look like a real stage natural, and your body is fierce up there! I can't wait to hear about your future plans xoxo
PS. Your comment about Max made me tear up! You two are seriously so sweet <3
I was super jittery haha. I was shaking like a leaf the whole time I was up there! There's a world of difference between being in front of a posing class with ~10 other competitors and standing up there in front of a crowd of a couple of hundred strangers!
DeleteIt did suck to work so hard for so long to get 4th place. BUT... judging is so subjective, and it's not like it was a total loss, ya know? I had to make these mistakes & learn these lessons at some point and now they're out of the way!
I thought I was getting too lean too. It was SO hard to just trust the process but man it works!! It's crazy what water manipulation can do!
Thank you - I am REALLY lucky to have found such a great guy =) =)
Congrats on your first show! You did great :) Don't get discouraged by your hair or your posing... it's your first time and you learn as you go! Trust me, I have major tanning issues the first FEW shows, my skin just doesn't take it. I learned, and now have the same person do my tan each time! Every show is different, every judge is different... so you could place totally different at another show!
ReplyDeleteKeep working hard girl, you'll get there! When you get to figure, let me know- I have a few suits you could always borrow. :)
I had tanning issues too! And I totally felt like it was my fault because the gals running the tanning booth just sounded so....irritated with me...I had to have 4 rounds of touch-ups when most people got 2. Maybe it wasn't my fault after all!
DeleteYou look fantastic!!! even placing is such a hug accomplishment (and I agree with the previous comment you look better than the girl on the right). You would ROCK a figure comp. can't wait to see where you do next.
ReplyDeleteWhat was your first meal post-contest?!
Thank you!!
DeleteFirst meal will not be part of WIAW because it was a restaurant meal/date night with Max =0) We shared the best nachos ever - they used potato wedges instead of chips - and then I had a steak & cheese and a glass of wine =) And let me tell you, I was HAMMERED after just one glass of Merlot.
So proud of you girl!!!You did it!!
ReplyDeleteI learned alot from my first show, and i continue to learn!!! Posing, etc all comes with time i guess!!!
Congrats <3
Now enjoy some food!!! :D
Thank you so much Andrea!! <3
DeleteYou did it! Congratulations girl!

ReplyDeleteCan't wait for the food porn LOL
Aww thank you so much Allie!!
DeleteSable- I remember my first competition, the whole experience is surreal, and then POOF! It's all over so fast and you wonder "will I ever do this again?" You will.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job, it's harder than anyone can even imagine unless they have walked in your shoes...and those shoes are a killer LOL! Hope you are enjoying the food, water, rest and the act you don;t have to worry about every single thing for a while...

I know you are being tough on yourself because you want to improve and learn from your experience but I am in AWE of how AWESOME you did and what a transformation you went through! So so so impressive - I agree with everyone who said your physique kicked everyone else's ass.
ReplyDeleteI understand why you want to switch to figure but just saying, when I was reading your recap all I could think is "Man I need to take this girl out and get her dancing on the bar of some club." HA. Hope you are enjoying some good food and relaxation to celebrate the show!
*dancing on the bar as in training for the audience-flirting factor of bikini comp. Ha, but that's why I don't write the training plans :)
DeleteYes let's go!! =) Please force me out of my shell!!! haha!!!
DeleteDude seriously I can't see your imperfections! You look amazing. I can't wait to see what you will look like when you do figure!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Cassidy!! I can't wait either!
DeleteCongratulations Sable, you put in so much effort and you're kick ass :) I don't know how you coped with the thirst! I'd have gone crazy haha. Well done!! :) xx
ReplyDeleteAw thank you so much!! The thirst was seriously hard!!
DeleteYou are amazing Sable!! I really loved reading your journey trough prep, i can only hope i look as fab as you do in march!! :)
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to that WIAW!
Question: would you do keto again? :) (hear a lot of different opionins on it - so just curious!)
I'm not sure! I'm kinda carb-crazy now. I'll let ya know a couple of months into the offseason =)
DeleteI cannot believe (well I can) how awesome you look after the culmination of all your training. Awesome work.
ReplyDeleteThank you Hollie!!!!
DeleteA big congrats to you for all of your hard work, dedication, and lookin' damn good!! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!!!! =)
DeleteWell done for working hard and I think your hair looks lovely even if you don't! My hair always looks a mess so yours looks great to me!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Kezzie!!!!
DeleteYour photos are incredible! What an inspiration :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think was the hardest part about the pre-comp journey?
Good question!!! =) Honestly the hardest part was the adjustment to a prep diet - after I got used to it, it was second nature - and peak week.
DeleteHuge goal accomplished. Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteBut you made me laugh over the peeing in a cup. Nearly killed me incision wise.
want to hear something - the first thing i thought when i saw those pics were how great your hair looked!
ReplyDeletei saw the confidence in your smile and that's a winner in my book!
