Surpriiiiise!

(Aside: I always spelled that word wrong in first grade and got kept in from recess to learn it correctly. To this day I always feel like I'm spelling it wrong!)

Lately I have been bringing tupperware with me everywhere, eating approximately a ton of vegetables, weighing myself on the regular and taking plenty of progress photos.

I haven't been really loud about it, but I have lost over 20 pounds in the past couple of months.

What happened?

Well, I finally started addressing my hypothyroidism appropriately.

I noticed that despite 100% adherence to a pretty decent deficit (-2500 calories per week), I lost about 3 pounds from January 1st to April. I had some lab work done, got a new prescription and hey, look, now my body is behaving itself. (If anyone has any personal questions about this, please contact me! SquatLikeALady@gmail.com!)

Ever since I started lifting over two years ago, I have wanted to do two things:

Get really, really strong and compete in a powerlifting meet, and compete in a figure show.

I haven't talked much about the second goal because I thought with my lame-ass metabolism courtesy of my stupid eating disorder (seriously kids, don't try that crud at home), I would never be able to get down to 15% bodyfat.

But now?

I think I can do it.

(My tummy holds all my fat! Seriously - I've lost more fat from my arms than I have from my stomach! :P It's coming off though. I know it is.)

So here I am. 14 weeks and 5 days out. And then participating in a powerlifting meet a month later.

  2. Wow! You great - check out that tricep definition! My stomach holds all of my body fat and I have difficulty losing it as well. For year I had undiagmosd insulin resistance (but totally normal sugars, hence no one ever testing me for it) and now that I'm on my medication, my body is definitey responding. You're going to kick butt at both competitions!

    1. Ugh, insulin resistance runs in my family - definitely not a fun thing to deal with, especially since it's so undiagnosed!!

      Thanks so much Gabby!!

  6. SABLE!!! This is huge news!!! I'm so excited for you :D :D :D

I cannot wait to follow your progress! I hold all my fat in my stomach too, so I can feel your pain. I have some internal issues going on too, which are stopping me losing that last bit of fat. I may just have to email you about it!

  7. Hooray!!!! I'm so excited for you! I think most of my fat is in my thighs and it just won't go away.

Also, I know you will be able to rock a figure show. Seriously.

    1. I've read that most women carry most of their fat in their thighs. Definitely not me. I'd almost prefer that... curvy thighs are better-looking than a curvy tummy! haha

  8. Goodness, you can see a massive difference - you've lost *so* much off your arms, and if you retain fat around your abs then God know what I do...

I wish I could emulate your success! I have no doubt you're capable of getting contest-ready :)

  9. You're looking amazing, Sable! I can't believe that you have lost 20 lbs already. That's great! I am glad that you are going after your goals, full-force and not looking back.

I really think I want to compete someday, but I keep pulling away from the idea. :/ I don't know why exactly. I guess I don't want to go down the road of disordered eating again. And, I want to be able to stick with my grain-free, paleo/primal diet while prepping. I also don't know if I can train for the competition on my own. I know it' all possible, but I guess I just don't know where to start. Do you have any advice on this matter? How are you approaching competition prep - training and diet?

Thanks so much. I love reading your blog, you're so real and down to earth! If you want, you can email me a response at kate.emmenegger@gmail.com

It's hard to keep up with blog comments sometimes. Thanks! :) Kate

  13. You look amazing Sable!! Congrats on your progress-your arms are looking so defined. I'm glad you were able to figure out your body's imbalances and get something to help with your thyroid. It can be super frustrating when your body is holding onto weight because of something being off.

I had that problem due to a particular birth control I was on, and kept gaining weight even while eating well and training for a half-marathon. Since September I've been on a different med, and between that and watching what I eat, I'm slowly losing the weight I'd gained. It's such a wonderful feeling.

    1. Thank you SO much Magdalena! <3 It is SUPER frustrating to look at the scale month in and month out and think, I'm doing everything right, what is going on?!?!?!

I'm glad you figured out your BC situation!! Hormones are so tricky.

(btw I did my first session of dedicated lifting today with my PT and kinda loved it! Apparently my dead lift is pretty perfect *dusts off shoulders* haha. It was pretty darn fun even though I was only using the bar so I can get the technique right! Just had to share the buzz with someone :) )

  23. You're looking amazing, Sable! How on earth, have you managed to lose 20 lbs.? Well you’ve done an awesome job. That's great!
And I am glad that you are fulfilling your dreams! Go Sable!!!!!
I meant to ask about your hypothyroidism. I have that problem too. Are you on meds? Or do some kind of healing diet to fix that?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm on meds =) There are diets that are supposed to help with healing but it's an endocrine problem so I'd rather address the endocrine system directly, you know? =) The meds I'm on don't seem to have any side effects other than the fact that I'm not tired and cold all the time anymore, which is WONDERFUL haha.

      Thank you so much!! <3

  24. Glad you got your meds sorted. hard to make progress when the endocrine system is wackadoodle.

Now. The banner pic of you in the grey fitness top... holy freaking shit!
