I just started really pushing myself in the gym again and I think I can officially relate to all the beginners out there again!!
My weights are down a little bit, as I expected, but they really haven't decreased by much. I haven't done any one-rep max testing, but based on my submaximal efforts I don't think I lost more than about 10lb from my bench and 25lb from my squat. I am confident that those precious pounds will come back quickly; muscle memory is a beautiful thing! :)
I have also been super conscious of my form during this comeback week. In the past, my body has kind of "remembered" the correct form for squatting, deadlifting, and benching (among other exercises), but now when I initiate a squat I go through a thirty-point checklist and maintain total body awareness throughout the entire movement.
My energy has been great during my workouts. The next day, though, I'm exhausted. I'm hoping that is something that I will (re)adjust to; I don't remember if this happened when I first started working out two years ago.
I'm also SUPER sore! I normally don't experience much DOMS, but I've been having trouble just walking since Monday. I love it half the time (it reminds me that I'm working out again!!) and hate it the other half (it doesn't feel particularly good).
In other news, I got bloodwork done! Yay, health insurance!
Boo, medical tape on the fuzzy part of my arm. =( Why do they always use such a long piece that it wraps basically all the way around your arm so that you have no choice but to wax yourself when you remove it?? Wouldn't a smaller piece work just as well? (I know. #whitewhine)
Happy almost-Friday!!!!
Oh yay on being back to heavy lifting. I imagine the DOMS will subside after a few more sessions. During my first half marathon training, I just couldn't keep up with leg workouts so I let those fall to the side. The first workout after the half....I thought I was broken!
ReplyDeleteI hope so! I'm over it! hahah
DeleteWoohooo I'm glad you're back into it! You'll get your lifts back up in no time.
ReplyDeleteThanks lady! Me too!!! =D
DeleteYipee!!! I'm so happy for you friend! I know you'll get right back to your old lifts pronto :-)
ReplyDeletePs-- I'm lovin that new collage at the top, it looks great!
Really?! It's driving me NUTS 'cuz I can't center it! haha!
DeleteYay! That's great news :D I still feel sore from Monday's workout too, and I have no excuse!
ReplyDeleteLove the new header, it's very pretty :D
I for one am really excited! =) I about flipped my lid when Jay emailed me saying I could start lifting again =D
DeleteCongratulations! I bet it feels so good to be back. I've just gotten back into my swimming lately and am just amazed at how well it's going.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree about the medical tape. Especially since you only have to leave it for a little while! Ugh.
Right?! It makes NO sense. If I was supposed to keep it covered for like... a couple of days, sure, that tape would probably be necessary. But when the phlebotomist literally says "Just keep this on for a few hours to make sure you're not going to start spurting blood out of nowhere"...... it seems to me that maybe a band-aid would suffice??!?!?
DeleteCongrats on being back to heavy lifting I bet it feels great. I know when I take some time off I LOVE that feeling of soreness... up until I have to go sit on the toilet or take the stairs then I'm all OOUUCH!
ReplyDeleteahhh I know I can't stand that tape they use! It's like here, please wrap that awful tape all the way around my arm so I have to peel off multiple pieces of arm hair.
HAHA exactly - I love it OTHER than when I have to sit and stand up all day at my desk. Ugh. I wound up just standing for most of the day Tuesday because it was better to just stay up than get up and down all day.
Deletei'm so glad that you're getting back to heavy lifting! yeah for recovering and listening to your body - and just think, starting off at your lower end gives you a bigger goal to work toward!
ReplyDeleteExactly!!! And I know I'll progress back to where I was pretty quickly, which means I should have a couple of weeks of post-injury-PRs! Wooooooooooo
Deleteso happy for you, love :) this post made me smile :) muscle memory really is a beautiful thing!
ReplyDeleteI did my back workout today and totally thought of you :) SQUEEEEEEZE those shoulder blades together!
Awww thanks Meg! <3 you're so sweet =)
DeleteWhen I first started working out (and ESPECIALLY when I was lifting for the first time) I was exhausted for a couple of weeks. Honestly, I had a euphoric feeling after the workout and the next day I would crash. Not sure if that was a one off but that's my two cents!
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'm normal then!!!!! =) I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually.
DeleteFirst I am so glad you changed your header (if only temporarily). That peach... it disturbed me. LOL
ReplyDeleteSo glad you are back at it and you have a greater appreciation for form since that is what is going to keep you in the long haul. : )))
DOMS is fine until you have to sit on the toilet. Sometimes I need a handicapped toilet so I won't yelp.
How is the pain and invisible sock?
I know! Sorry it took me so long! lol!!!
DeleteThe pain is gone (knock on wood!) and the invisible sock feeling is now ONLY in one particular patch near my heel. =D It's slowly retreated 'up' the foot over the past few weeks and I think it'll disappear completely soon - WOO FREAKIN' HOO!
Welcome back!! (Well I can't really welcome you since heavy heavy lifting isn't my forte but you get what I'm going for.)
ReplyDeleteDigging the new header layout too!
hehe thanks! I'm surprised you guys like it! It's a little off-center and it's KILLINGGGG me haha!
DeleteCongrats on getting back to heavy lifting!! Doesn't it feel good... even the DOMS a little bit? Loving the new layout too :)
ReplyDeleteIt dooooes!! Thanks! :D I'm psyched!
DeleteOh gosh, needles...CRINGE! I seriously swore I was going to throw a hissy fit if I had to get a shot today...blessings to you girlfriend, haha.
ReplyDeleteYou're back in the gym and already kicking ass. I expect nothing less from you :) I miss you!
Ugh funny story - sort of, now that it's over.... when Max was in the military I got a really bad infection and rather than prescribing penicillin PILLS, the base we were at used penicillin SHOTS... so I had to get a whopper dose of penicillin via needle... in the tush =( Needles have not bothered me since! hahaha
DeleteMiss you toooooooooooooo!! <3
*Back in the gym lifting heavier....oops. The codiene, it's the codiene.
