Mushy Monday: Be A Poser

You know that saying, "Be the change you want to see in the world"? Gandhi's great and all but he should have said "Be the change you want to see in yourself."
Holla!
If you want to be a runner, act like a runner. Call yourself a runner. Dress like a runner. Go for runs. Fuel like a runner.

If you want to be healthy, act like a healthy person does. Call yourself healthy. Fuel like a healthy person does. Treat your body like a healthy person does.

Want to be a bodybuilder? Act like one. Call yourself a bodybuilder. (I had trouble with this at first too.) Dress like a bodybuilder. Lift weights. Fuel like a bodybuilder. Learn about bodybuilding.

Ever since Kai Greene went pro, 'dress like a bodybuilder' means 'wear your Halloween costume wherever you darn well please'

Live the lifestyle, and the results will follow.

Yes, it's hard not to feel like a poser when you're the skinny looking girl using lifting straps or gloves or chalk. It's hard not to feel like a poser when you call yourself a runner, but you can only run 2 minutes at a stretch.  It feels almost hypocritical to call yourself healthy when not too long ago you were binging and purging.

But here's the thing: that discomfort, that weird feeling you get calling yourself what you aspire to be, means you are growing.

And guess what? We all have been there. Even Jamie Eason, even Monica Brant, even Jay Cutler.

Props to Oxygen Magazine
And here's the other thing. It will help you make better decisions.  It's easier to choose not to skip your workout when you call yourself a bodybuilder; it's easier to choose the healthier meal option when you call yourself a  bodybuilder.  It's easier not to binge and purge when you define yourself as a healthy person...because after all, binging and purging is not what a healthy person does.

Embrace the discomfort. Embrace the new you. Define yourself, choose your path, and live the life you want.

  2. That is so true. I find it much easier now to resist staffroom biscuits and things, as I have a healthy pre run snack, and I reason with myself that my planned snack will help my run far better than a biscuit. You are right, act like a healthy person and you will be a healthy person.

  3. This is wonderful advice. In lifting, I definitely feel like a noob most of the time. However, everyone's a beginner at some point! I hope one day (a year from now? 5 years? 15?) I can feel like a real lifter. Until then, I'm enjoying learning!

  4. I love this post! It's SO true. We must define ourselves as who we WANT to be. Doing anything less is complacency and leads to living a sub-par unfullfilling life!

  5. before you even mentioned the word growth, a light bulb went on and I thought....Its all about growing into you passion, right? And confidence to get there!

  6. Well said! I think its so true. In my mind I picture who and what I want to be and it helps push me harder and faster. You are so right about embracing the discomfort and just getting out of your comfort zones. I think only then can you truly see what your made of. Love this post! Have a great day!

  7. Wow, you have this amazing way of just cutting through crap. I love it! You're right: so long as we're waiting to become something, we're putting it off. And if we're putting it off, then it's really easy to make excuses: skip the workout, eat the cookie, etc. My problem is I don't know what I want to call myself yet: runner or lifter. But that's a post for another day I think!

    Thanks for the mush :)

  9. Love all you girls! =) I am just sayin', whenever Max & I do this cross-country move thang, I better be able to meet ALL of you :)

Alyssa, I think you can be BOTH :) I mean one will always take precedence and priority over the other. That's just how things are. BUT I'm just saying I have been reading over a lot of your older posts (re my own vegetarian/vegan/how far can I go without killing my body dilemma...cliff notes: eggs and yogurt stay for now) and you are pretty much a rock star.

  14. What a wonderful post Sable! Sometimes I struggle calling myself a runner because I "can only" run a 5k or 5 miles. OMGOSH! I can run! Why would I have a doubt? I guess because all my life I was a fat person and am still struggling not to beat myself up and put myself down.
